Everyday People Answer The Question: What Is Meditation?

August 22, 2019

I Asked The Facebook Meditation Community

After I finished the blog The Guru Is Dead I decided to mine the resource I'd been preaching about that is within the heart and mind of every single person. We have The Way of Meditation Facebook Community where there are so many beautifully minded people practising a broad range of different meditations from different traditions. We come together as an online community united as human beings sharing our experiences and knowledge with no leader or Guru just a common interest in peace, love and unity.

So I posed the question to the group for the purpose of writing this blog, what is meditation? This question had come up before and I was in awe of the responses so I asked again and below are the honest, authentic and incredibly enlightened answers from everyday people:

What Is Meditation?
  • “Meditation is a process where the doer gains nothing but lose anger, stress, anxiety, fear, jealousy, hatred and suffering. It's a process through which one learns the purpose of life. Through meditation One can easily taste the nectar hidden inside. This is the nectar of happiness , peace and love.” ~Pankaj Nijhawann

  • “Meditation is quieting the mind and being in the present moment as an observer.” ~Ciria Moore

  • “Meditation is saying yes, even when you’re saying no. Whatever is happening, it is a deep yes, until you realise that everything was already allowed. Until you realise that we are always saying yes, we just don’t recognise it.” ~Jack Preston

  • “Meditation to me is taking full responsibility for your state of mind. Being quiet enough to hear my inner self, to know once I oversee my human condition, I am a true source of awareness and connected to everything to become the ultimate observer of the human experience.” ~Juanita Heart

  • "Meditation is the gateway to infinite possibilities." ~John Torres
  • “Meditation is looking within, past the muddy waters of the mind. It filters out the ego so that you can swim in the deep clean ocean of the consciousness.” ~Thane Govinda

  • Meditation is calming down, looking inside, analysing, distancing from many things....deeper understanding of myself...and much more.....wonderful daily work integrating meditation from morning to night.” ~ Christine Steck

  • "Meditation is the intentional use of attention to alter consciousness." ~Daimon Sweeney

  • “Meditation is a tool for knowing Oneself/Truth. It's the only tool that pulls us from somewhere else and brings to the moment (Consciousness). It relates with how to prevent our inner chemical factory from working against itself. In simple words Meditation = Consciousness.” ~Priya Sharma

  • "I experience meditation as practising, consciously aware and knowing, realizing the True Nature of both absolute and relative realities. I seek the day meditation ceases and Samadhi begins." ~Jerry Collwel

  • "It’s the art of cessation without effort." ~William T. Langill Jr.

  • “Meditation is an act of self-love. When we give ourselves the gift of stillness, we receive the embrace of the loving-kindness presence. This gives us a boost that we can use throughout our day. Every interaction is an opportunity to expand our inner loving kindness toward others, which is the same as to say, toward ourselves.” ~Adriana Winters

  • “Meditation is the practice of being present with the source of everything. Meditation is removing attention from thoughts, emotions and bodily perceptions to be open to awareness of the flow of all-that-is on every vibrational level. Prayer is a type of meditation wherein one imagines a specific expression of the universal consciousness, and focuses mind, feeling and perceptions so that it creates the energetic vibrational pattern of what is imagined within the universal consciousness, which then manifests it in physical form.” ~Christopher Aune

  • “Meditation is being mindful of the four aspects of a person to develop wisdom i.e. to observe the truth of all aspects of a person to be impermanent and have no self. This is the right path to Nirvana.” ~Hla Hla Win
  • “Meditation is the quiet ever-present home of awareness itself, your own true nature. Unique to all in it's preparations until one is one with everything, beyond everything and the emptiness of everything simultaneously. Meditation is free. All the best things in life are. You are.” ~Kirk Dalgrin

  • “For me meditation is a process which is never ending. Meditation’s main purpose is PEACE. Listening to your inner voice is Meditation. It calms your mind and helps you to connect with your inner self. It makes your mind clear about your soul purpose in this life.” ~ Rakhi Malhotra

  • "Meditation is to observe silence like the stillness beneath a soaring bird's wing." ~Sanjay Khetan

  • “Meditation is like two, two-way mirrors reflecting on what is both externally and internally occurring, seeing a true reflection of inward and outward self. Like with all mirrors when light hits it, that beam shows you where you need to go and focus your energy. It's peace in pieces, you can both observe and act.” ~ Angela Owen

  • “Meditation is the highest form of Oxygen in your body, mind and Spirit which makes you feel intoxicatingly happy within your System. It helps you to experience the higher dimensions of our Universe making us feel that our life is a continuous rhythm. It helps us to raise our
  • level of concentration thus making us read our bio memory.” ~ Madhulika Kapoor

  • “Meditation is to become the observer, not the participant.” ` SJ Wolfe

  • “To observe and look at your real self.” ~ Kenta Nilsson

  • “Finite meets infinite.” ~Meghraj Menghani

  • "When meditating we look within. A question arises “what am I looking at?” Meditation is to take a change of view point. Looking to see what one is. One looks to see what is seeing. An answer arises out of one in the moment. “I see it now!” Enlightenment." ~Vincent Van

In today’s fast-paced world, the mind often races, driven by the demands of work, family, and personal ambitions. Meditation is commonly seen as a practice to calm the mind, foster inner peace, and connect with deeper aspects of existence. Yet, one crucial element often overlooked is the state of the body, particularly the nervous system. Relaxing the nervous system isn’t just a preparatory step; it is foundational for unlocking the deeper states of awareness and tranquility that meditation promises. Drawing insights from my journey and teachings, we will explore why this is so vital and how it transforms the meditative experience.
